Dec 09, 2017 | Another great year comes to an End
Shidokan ends the year 2017 on a bright note, with a high grading pass rate and great results at various competitions in both kendo and iaido. New recruits have also bolstered our ranks, and we look forward to seeing them improve in their practice. Our members have created a solid foundation from which we hope to see the club grow into next year. After a short hiatus to enjoy the holidays with friends and family, we will get back to work towards even greater results! |
None of this would have been possible if not for the guidance and advice we have received from sensei(s), sempai(s), and friends. We would like to thank Santoso Sensei and Dean Jolly Sensei for their patience during every practice; Julio Kenji Toida Sensei and his family, Ariyama Sensei, and the rest of MKC for their hospitality; Goyo Ohmi Sensei and Stephen Cruise Sensei who visit Shidokan every year for a wonderful seminar; Lawrence Tsuji Sensei, whom we had the pleasure of meeting at JCCC; our friends from other dojos, near and far; and to everyone else who has participated in our growth as both practitioners and individuals. Thank you!
Dec 02 & 03, 2017 | CKF Iaido Grading at Etobicoke, ON
On December 2nd the Mu Mon Kai Iaido Club hosted the annual fall iaido grading, held at the Etobicoke Olympium. We had the privilege of attending a seminar taught by a wide array of notable iaidoka, including: Shozo Kato Sensei, Pam Parker Sensei, Goyo Ohmi Sensei, Stephen Cruise Sensei, and many more visiting from across Canada and the United States. Shidokan did very well in the grading, with all applicants passing their respective exams. |
The next day the Mu Mon Kai Open Taikai took place. Shidokan carried the spirit from the previous day forward and performed very well. Carolina Merizalde obtained first place in the Mudansha division and Dean Jolly Sensei obtained second place in the 5-Dan division. Mariel Balzola also brought back the Haruna Spirit Award. Congratulations!
We would like to express our gratitude to Mu Mon Kai and all the other organizers at the Etobicoke Olympium for putting together these events. We look forward to facing the challenges that the new year will bring!

Aug 05 & 06, 2017 | Canadian National Kendo Championships, Markham ON
On the Sunday afternoon, provinces competed against one another following the format of the International Kendo Federation. Friends from McGill University Kendo Club, Québec Kendo Kai, and Université de Montréal Kendo Club, as well as members from Shidokan (Alysha Hum, Gabriel Schor and Benjamin Vial), formed the ranks of Team Québec.
Congrats to Team QC Men for obtaining the silver medal and Team QC Women: bronze medal.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the organizers of the event, to the coaches of Team Québec for dedicating their time and knowledge, as well as to Santoso Sensei for his continued guidance.
June 10 & 11, 2017 | Quebec Kendo Open & Grading
The day after the Quebec Open, on June 4th, six of our members attended the grading in Quebec City to challenge their next rank. Each of them passed their exam, and it is with pride that Shidokan would like to congratulate them. Our dojo is now one yondan, one sandan, one nidan and three shodan stronger!
As Santoso Sensei says, earning a rank is a stepping stone towards the next objective. Let us keep that in mind, and train with renewed dedication.

April 7 & 8, 2017 | Visit from MKC & Quebec Kendo Kai
On Friday, April 7, we received the visit of our friends from the Montreal Kendo Club. Kenji Toida Sensei and Junko Ariyama Sensei led the practice, which was laden with great exercises to help us reinforce our kihon. In particular, we were able to improve our tenouchi and to initiate our body movement from the hips, while keeping a strong center. After some much-needed kakarigeiko, during which everyone displayed strong spirit, we shared jigeiko before enjoying well-deserved refreshments at PJ's. We would like to thank Toida Sensei and Ariyama Sensei for the useful knowledge they shared with us, as well as the rest of our friends from MKC for coming in such numbers. The very next day, on April 8, four of our friends from Quebec Kendo Kai joined us for our morning practice. True to their words, they returned with all their spirit. The morning was spent focusing on getting as much keiko time as possible, after which we had a kakarigeiko to warm us up for a quick shiai. Thank you for your visit, we hope to see you again soon! |
